Foot and Hand Reflexology

Relaxation, attention and balance through the hands and feet

Foot and hand reflexology are complementary and holistic treatment methods in which reflex zones on the feet and hands are addressed through targeted touch, pressure techniques and massage. Within reflexology, it is assumed that these reflex zones are connected to different parts of the body.

Many people experience reflexology as a valuable moment of calm, relaxation and personal attention. The treatment focuses on promoting general wellbeing, relaxation, awareness and experiencing greater balance.

At Vuurdraak, every session is tailored to the individual client. Depending on the situation, treatment of the feet, the hands or a combination of both may be chosen. Attention is given to your personal situation, wishes and needs, so that every treatment is built up in a calm, respectful and appropriate way.

A centuries-old tradition

Reflexology has a long history and originates from various ancient cultures, including Egypt, China and India. In diverse traditional health and wellbeing systems, pressure points on the feet, hands and ears were used as part of a holistic approach to wellbeing and balance.

Within some traditional schools of thought, the existence of a life energy, also known as Qi, is assumed. Within this view, reflexology is regarded as a method that supports relaxation and can contribute to experiencing balance and wellbeing.

Although reflexology is applied and valued by many people worldwide, the underlying theories are based on traditional and holistic perspectives and not on generally accepted medical science.

How does reflexology work?

Within reflexology, work is done with reflex zones on the feet and hands. According to the traditional reflexology view, these zones correspond to different parts of the body.

For example, the toes and fingertips are often associated with the head and neck area, the ball of the foot and hand with the chest area, the arch of the foot and the palm with the abdominal area, and the heel with the pelvic area.

These reflex zones are treated by means of targeted pressure techniques and massage. During a session, clients may experience relaxation, warmth, tingling or temporary sensitivity. The experience differs from person to person and from treatment to treatment.

Foot reflexology

In foot reflexology, work is done with reflex zones on the feet. The feet contain many nerve endings and play an important role in posture, movement and body awareness.

Many clients experience a treatment as a moment of deep relaxation, calm and attention to themselves.

Hand reflexology

Hand reflexology works according to principles similar to foot reflexology, but focuses on reflex zones in the hands.

This form of reflexology can be a pleasant alternative when treatment of the feet is temporarily undesirable or not possible, for example in the case of an injury, increased sensitivity or personal preference.

Many clients experience a treatment of the hands as accessible, relaxing and soothing.

Combination of hands and feet

At Vuurdraak, it is possible to choose to treat both the hands and the feet during a single session. This creates a comprehensive and personal treatment that can be optimally tailored to the needs and comfort of the client.

Personal attention and a tailored approach

No two people are the same. That is why no standard protocol is followed; instead, attention is given to what is appropriate at that moment.

Some clients experience mainly physical relaxation, while others experience more mental calm, awareness or a sense of wellbeing. The experience of a treatment is personal and can differ from person to person.

The aim of every session is to create a moment of attention, relaxation and restoration of balance, within the limits of what feels pleasant, safe and responsible for you.

Possible experiences during and after a treatment

Every client responds differently to a treatment. Many people experience a feeling of relaxation, calm or wellbeing during or after a session.

Some clients notice that they become more aware of tension in the body or that they need extra rest after a treatment. Temporary sensitivity of certain reflex zones may also occur.

Because every person is unique, experiences and reactions can differ. No specific results or effects can be guaranteed.

Contraindications and precautions

For many people, foot and hand reflexology are safe and relaxing forms of complementary support. Even so, there are situations in which a treatment must be adapted, postponed or not carried out.

For this reason, an intake takes place before a first treatment and, if necessary, an additional medical history may be taken.

Extra caution or consultation with a doctor or treating healthcare provider is advised in cases including:

  • acute infections or fever
  • thrombosis or an increased risk of it
  • serious cardiovascular problems
  • open wounds, inflammation or skin infections on the hands or feet
  • recent surgery or medical procedures
  • serious injuries to the hands or feet
  • pregnancy, depending on the stage of the pregnancy and the personal situation
  • other medical conditions where there is doubt about participation

In some cases, it may be decided to adapt the treatment, postpone it or not carry it out.

Safety and personal responsibility

Before a first session, an assessment is made of whether the treatment is appropriate and responsible. It is important that clients provide relevant information about their health, medication use and any medical treatments fully and truthfully.

On the basis of this information, it may be decided to adapt a treatment, postpone it or not carry it out.

In case of any doubt about participation, it is advised to first contact a general practitioner, specialist or other treating healthcare provider.

The safety, wellbeing and personal situation of the client always come first.
